#RainbowSnippets: Rise of the Alpha Squirrel

Rainbow Snippets is a group of authors who get together every Saturday to post a 6 line snippet from a work in progress, or a work that’s already been published. There’s tons of fun reading every week, so check them out here!

Last week I introduced the red panda twins, who were named after Devon Hunter. (This is important information for the blog tour and giveaway starting Thursday. Hint, hint) This week I’m introducing Alice and Rudy, the pygmy fainting goat kids. (Mom’s a pygmy goat, Dad’s a fainting goat. It was my daughter’s idea.) This snippet happens shortly after the “Protect the burgers!” of last week. 😀

Alice, dodging a sneak attack by Hunter from under the table, ran straight into the back of Vince’s knees. “Hey!” he yelled, and made a grab for her with his free arm, but she hopped merrily over it and kept running. With a happy bleat, she scrambled between the two men and ran into the undergrowth.

Her brother raced after her, until Devon popped out from behind a small tree, paws spread wide and trills of excitement filling the air. Rudy jumped sideways, then stiffened and fell over.

Alice popped out of the bushes. Her bleats sounded like a laugh as she jumped over him, headed for the picnic table.

As a bonus, here’s a video of some baby fainting goats (no fainting though)

And they have a couple of live webcams, or goatcams, where you can watch the goats do what goats do. (Link is found on the YouTube page.)

Rise of the Alpha Squirrel

Nutty Romances 2

Nathan's met Vince's family, but Vince hasn't met Nathan's, and Nathan would like to keep it that way. Holy smoked almonds, what else do you do when you know how completely nuts your relatives are?

Why, you ease your man into it, by introducing him to normal shifters. Assuming you can find any.

But with a gossipy werehummingbird spreading the news, and a pair of young red pandas wreaking havoc with their fainting goat friends, Nathan’s about ready to climb into a pine cone and pull it in after him.

Then the local playboy weremoose hears about Vince, and Nathan has to find his inner alpha or the consequences will be worse than moldy hazelnuts.

Alpha Squirrel is a Bestseller!

aRe 36 Less than a day after going on pre-order, Alpha Squirrel has hit All Romance Ebooks Bestseller list. Thank you to everyone who pre-ordered! You’ve really made my day. My beta readers tell me you won’t be disappointed; I’m a little too close to it still to have any opinion on the relative merits of the story. For those who thought the first one was short on world-building, though, this one makes up for it. 🙂

Rise of the Alpha Squirrel

Nutty Romances 2

Nathan's afraid to introduce Vince to other shifters. After all, who wouldn't want to steal good-enough-to-lick-all-over Vince? But Fate--and boyfriends--have a way of cracking all your best laid plans.

#RainbowSnippets: Rise of the Alpha Squirrel

RiseoftheAlphaSquirrelfinalAs we get closer to release date, my fingernails get shorter. I’ve been bouncing around the story trying to figure out a good 6 lines to use for Rainbow Snippets this week (check out all of them here!), but I’ve found one that sort of introduces a few new characters.

Now, there’s a bit of a story behind these characters. I’ll explain the goats next week, but the red pandas I’ll explain right now. Devon Hunter is an actor in porn films and sometime male escort, and he loves red pandas. Like, serious squeeing kind of love. It all started as people being silly, chatting on Twitter, but somewhere in there, the red panda family was born, and the twins, Devon and Hunter, ended up being named after Devon. (But, Devon is way better behaved than the twins. Not that the twins mean badly, they’re just young and determined and, well–twins). And that’s why the book is dedicated to Devon.

There’s a serious possibility of Devon and Hunter and their older brother Jake coming back in their own book, once I get Nathan and Vince mostly squared away.

The subtle rustling of the bushes created a haven of privacy for them. Nathan had just finished licking raspberry juice and salad dressing from Vince’s fingers when it occurred to him—there wasn’t actually any wind. He sat back and peered in the direction of the noise.

A small red, masked face poked through the leaves. A second one popped up, right beside it. Then, with a massive crash of snapping twigs, two little black and white goats leaped over the pandas and into the campsite.

“Protect the burgers,” Nathan cried and ran to intercept the four-legged torpedoes barreling around the picnic table.

Alpha Squirrel went to beta readers yesterday–late, yes. Health issues and input from my usual “must add 2000 words at the last minute” brain. But it’s gone and now I get to chew my nails and attempt to distract myself with another work in progress and pre-formatting on the manuscript. Yes, I’m also totally doing stuff out of order, which may come back to bite me. Blame my stupid immune system–I do. 😀

In keeping with the hummingbird theme, I thought I’d give you a slightly better intro to Charlie. He’s not in the scene yet, but Nathan is trying to prepare Vince for his first encounter with a were other than Nathan.

“A hummingbird?” Vince’s expression was incredulous. “You’re kidding me.”

“What? You can believe in a squirrel shifter, but not a hummingbird?” There was movement in the trees, a flash of pale skin, getting closer.

“Listen, he’s got a bit of a Napoleon complex—all hummingbirds do. Don’t make fun of him being a bit on the small side, it just gets him all worked up and then he’s impossible to live with.”

“A hummingbird with a temper.”

Assuming everything goes to plan, Alpha Squirrel should go on pre-order on February 15, and be available for sale on February 25. Keep an eye open for the blog tour, as well. We’re posting excerpts from a couple of books written by a team of weres with doctorates (And yes, they’re exactly as wordy and pretentious as you expect.), who have produced a series of self-help books to help weres integrate into human society.

Check out the rest of our Snippets–there’s some really great ones that will make you need a second TBR pile!
