Obsessive Author is Obsessive

I promised myself I wouldn’t fall into the ‘checking the sales figures’ trap. In fact, I was sure I was going to have no trouble at all holding out.

calvin-hobbes-f12-46That lasted about thirty seconds.

So, I’ve set myself up with Novelrank, so I can watch the Amazon sales (or not, as the case may be). Oddly enough, the only ones who aren’t buying Bite Me Tender are my fellow Canadians. Come on, ya hosers! Get with the program!

I’ve checked the bestseller list on All Romance Ebooks. Not sure what this means, or if it’s even important, but it was pretty neat to see Bite Me Tender at #50 on the Bestseller list. No silver star yet. That would be awesome.

The worst of it is trying to figure out what it all means, then realizing that, ultimately, it doesn’t mean anything.

And ten minutes later finding yourself back staring at the numbers again.

In the end, though, I find my interest is already waning. I’ll know my numbers when I know. Novelrank is easy to get into, so I look at it once or twice a day, depending on how often hubs texts me to see how the book is doing. He finds this whole thing entertaining, which baffles me, because he was singularly uninterested while I was writing the story.

Puzzled author is baffled.

I will admit to a certain glee, as I watch my critique group members approach their own debut publication. Jena Wade is next, with Torquere Press. Then Genna Donaghy with Loose Id. They’ve neither of them, yet, succumbed to this addiction, being still immersed in edits and choosing covers.

And as I open another tab in my browser and pop on over to Novelrank to have a peek, I laugh and rub my hands fiendishly. For their time shall come…and I will enjoy the dubious pleasure of, “I told you so!”

I published a few short stories via Smashwords.com and kept checking the stats every ten minutes. The novelty has worn off by now, so I only check it once every couple of weeks when it occurs to me. Good luck on your silver star!

Thanks, Amanda! It’s probably over-ambitious of me, but I love my boys. I’d hate to think I’m the only one, lol!
