Surprise! It’s Just a Week by Jena Wade

Jena stepped into the breach for another author and her new book, Just A Week, has come out a week early! (I could make the obvious pun, but it’s already been done, lol.)

It’s a cute story, kind of an opposites attract/don’t judge a book by its cover/you never know where you’re gonna find love theme. Very simple, but sweet and endearing. It’s on for $2.69 for its debut week. 🙂

Just a week is not enough time to fall in love, but Fate doesn’t care. Seth’s carefully crafted plan for how his life will go doesn’t include falling in love with a guy in his horrible hometown. He wants to start a new life anywhere but at home. Until Maddox storms in with his multi-colored hair and carefree attitude.
Long distance relationships don’t work and Seth isn’t into gambling with his future. But the more time he spends with Maddox, the more he’s willing to throw caution to the wind. Now his plan for the rest of his life has been turned upside down and seems to include things Seth never thought possible, including a lifetime of happiness in his hometown.

Excerpt:
I headed out the door and grabbed the book I started a few days ago out of my car. In high school I would always go to the park and read when it was nice out. My parents were happy knowing I got fresh air, and I was happy just to get lost in the world of whatever book had captured my attention.
I found my usual bench unoccupied. Thank goodness. It sat underneath a giant oak tree that provided a good amount of shade. About a hundred feet away sat a set of playground equipment for kids. Since it was Sunday evening, there weren’t many kids around.

The screech and clicks of skateboards on metal had me looking around like I’d just entered a parallel universe. What the hell?

Where there used to be old basketball hoops with raggedy nets, there now stood a half-pipe and other random obstacles used for skateboarding tricks. A half dozen teenagers and young adults whizzed around each other. Some on boards, others on rollerblades. All of them moving at high speed.

There was a lot of laughing, and every so often someone shouted, “Check this out,” before trying some stunt on the rail, usually resulting in a fall or stumble.

Squealing kids on a swing set I could drown out. But this, I wasn’t so sure about. It was new. And distracting.

One young man in particular stood out. Mostly because he had bright orange hair that spiked in every direction, possibly looking like it could impale a person if they were to touch it. Like a cactus. He also looked a bit older than the teenagers that surrounded him, which might explain why they all seemed to look up to him like he was a god.

He wore a black zip-up sweatshirt, though it was warm enough to go without, and jeans that were skintight.

Once I started watching him, I noticed that the other skaters watched him too. He had talent. He kept his balance well, and his moves seemed effortless. While the other skaters floundered and wobbled as they zoomed around, he kept calm and collected.

I didn’t understand the appeal of skateboarding, especially on a half-pipe. What was the purpose of putting yourself in harm’s way like that? Might as well throw myself down a flight of stairs if I wanted to break a bone.

Orange-haired Guy stood on the deck of the half-pipe. He stared down the slope below, his face unreadable. He didn’t call the others to gather around and watch, though I had a feeling they would anyway.
He took a deep breath and hopped on his board.

I held my breath, like I was the one up there. I watched in wonder as he gained momentum, back and forth, up and down the half-pipe. Once he had enough speed he began his flips. It looked amazing to me. Him flipping in the air, his feet staying on the board as he spun, then landing perfectly to do it all over again. I guess I had never bothered to watch any skateboarding before. Maybe I would have if they had looked like this skateboarder.

3 x 3 WIP and Tag, You’re It!

I’m going to tag @Ann-Katrin Byrde and @Amelia Faulkner for this. The idea is to post the first three lines from the first three chapters of your current work in progress. Since dayjob is done for a bit, I’ll finally have the time and the spoons to work on The Wall Nuts, so I guess that makes it my WIP. 🙂

Chapter 1: Happy Beginnings

Nathan lay on Vince’s bed in absolute bliss, while his incredibly good-looking, fantastically wonderful boyfriend massaged his way from Nathan’s shoulders to the small of his back. With firm, loving strokes, Vince chased down every last ounce of tension in Nathan’s body and left him cheeping sleepily against the soft cotton.
Best present ever.

Chapter 2: A Bird in the Kitchen

Nathan decided to make a run by the kitchen before he jumped in the shower, just to see if could put the brakes on Charlie. Charlie didn’t actually eat a whole lot—there was only so much you could fit into that tiny frame of his at one time—but he had a typical hummingbird’s addiction to sweets and a tendency to get…feisty while on a sugar high. Plus, if he ate enough, there was also the problem of that little allergy of his.

Chapter 3: Road Trip of Your Nightmares

Two hours into the four hour drive, Charlie wedged himself through the gap between the front seats. “Are we there yet?”
Nathan rolled his eyes and pushed Charlie back into the back seat. “Put your seat belt on. And we’re five minutes closer than we were the last time you asked.”

Cover Reveal for A.L. Boyd: Soaring Hearts

A.L. is a member of my critique group. It’s fun to watch a story you’ve seen go through the critique process as it gets ready to head out into the world and meet readers. She’s finalized the cover–which I think is gorgeous–and it’s a lovely story. She hasn’t decided on a release date yet, but it won’t be long!

It’s finally here! The Sequel to Heloise West’s Hitting Black Ice!

HeloiseWest_SendLawyersGunsandRoses_coverlgOn Pre-order at Loose Id right now, but it releases tomorrow, so if you prefer to buy elsewhere, it’s not a long wait.

So, a quick recap: Hunter is a physician’s assistant in an emergency room, still recovering from the suicide of his ex-lover. He’s got a crush on a quiet, introverted young man who also works at the hospital. Like in so many big city ERs, violence is always hovering on the edge of happening, and after one such incident, Hunter and ‘Shawn’ find themselves indulging in some ‘we’re still alive!’ sex in the closet. Which kicks off a relationship that involves the FBI, secret identities, big time criminals, and a race for their lives.

Send Lawyers, Guns, and Roses picks up shortly after Hitting Black Ice, and tells the story of Hunter and Alex as they adjust to life as their real selves, and work through the pain in their pasts. They go on a romantic vacation together, but–true to all thrillers–excitement and danger just aren’t ready to leave them alone.

Blurb:

When Hunter and Alex (formerly Shawn) are given the vacation of a lifetime, it’s a chance for them to pay attention to romance and get out of the path of danger. The tiny Caribbean island of Saba is gorgeous, the first to have marriage equality, and the Sabans are the nicest people on earth.

There’s lots of rum poolside for relaxing and a room with a mirror on the ceiling for passion. Hot karaoke nights, cold beer, and new friends.

Their new friends Orfeo and Max, and Max’s sister Talisha, share a troubling secret. Alex and Hunter want to help. As a hurricane bears down on them, a dead body surfaces, and a purple backpack loaded with stolen jewels leads a pair of dangerous men to the island.

Alex would rather poke his own eyes out with a pointy stick than call on his old enemy Nick Truman for help; he’d also do anything to keep Hunter out of danger. But even his nemesis can’t reach them now.

Once again, they only have each other to depend on as their paradise is about to become hell on earth.

HeloiseWest_HittingBlackIce_coversmHitting Black Ice:
ER physician’s assistant Hunter guards his heart carefully, but that doesn’t stop him from falling for Shawn, the front desk clerk. He keeps his distance from relationships for a reason, but just can’t help himself when it comes to Shawn.

Shawn is on the run from the law and love to protect himself and anyone else involved. One man is dead because of him, and his life now is simple and easily thrown into a bag at any hint of danger. Until he meets Hunter, and he no longer wants to run.

Forced into a hostage situation, buried passion explodes in the aftermath, and sex in the supply closet brings their hearts back to life. Tentatively, step by step, they begin to explore a relationship together until the past catches up with Shawn.

FBI agent Nick Truman has finally found his man, but when Shawn escapes, he focuses his attention on Hunter. Shawn returns, even though it means sacrificing himself to save Hunter from the man who framed him for murder.

Neglected Blog is Sad :(

1978807_321519584667893_6995466395857257882_nIt’s been a while since my last post. I’ve been working on some stuff, and dealing with the kind of roll-with-the-punches situations that life seems to be throwing at me lately.

I’m still playing with brain.fm. I don’t find it quite as effective, but it’s pretty close. I think letting the kid use it a couple of times moved it away from my optimum, but I’m slowly getting it back. I’ve settled on an average of 3000 words per day, one the days that I get anything done, but any time I try to switch back to one of my main projects, it plummets, which is frustrating. I think it’s because the practice projects have simpler storylines, so it’s easier to just sit and roll through it. I’m pantsing them too, which probably doesn’t help with the main projects.

Today, I plan to write a couple of scenes in The Wall Nuts, a few more in Proud Flesh, and a few more in a side project. It’s storming here, because Canada. Six inches of snow. I’ve decided that we all, collectively, need to buy Mother Nature a few drinks and get her laid. I keep checking my email and hoping that my daughter’s dance class is cancelled, lol. It feels like a pajama day. Brrrr.

Other than that, I’m still looking at late May for The Wall Nuts, simply because of editor scheduling. And I’m going to need to pick up some shifts at the old day job, because a couple of big bills just landed on my lap. I hate this in-between state, where I’m making almost enough to manage the household bills, but not enough to handle any emergencies. And this year has been one emergency after another, so it’s just proved the point that I’m not ready yet to chuck the day job and go whole hog at this writing thing. Close, but that only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. Maybe in another year, once I’ve got the major house repairs done, and a bit of money put away for emergencies. (Because heaven knows, they do seem to like me.)

My niece and nephew are thinking about moving out of the country to look for work, as well. Which means I’m expecting to inherit some of their menagerie. The girlchild may get her snake after all. And I may end up with some sort of lizard. And a dog. And possibly some birds. (Yeah, I wasn’t kidding about menagerie.)

So pray for me to have a snow day. Because I just realized I left the car windows cracked open and the car will be full of snow now. O.O

Don’t Know What Hit Me, But I Like It :)

sloth-soon-memeFor a while, back when I started writing, I hit 3.5K words a day, which is pretty good for a noob. Then life happened, I stopped writing for a while, and my brain went to mush. For the past year, 500 words was the best I could manage in a day, even if I sat in front of the computer all day. I was at the end of my rope, and seriously considering giving it all up.

The last week, though, I’ve been burning up the keyboard. 2000, 2500, 3000 words a day. I can’t say for sure what caused it, but there’s probably a few things. One is that I’m working on three different projects–two that have been stewing in the back of my brain for a while, and one that’s a throwaway experiment, so I have literally zero stress about whether it works, or makes sense, or even gets out into the world. I’m trying it to see if I can make it work and if I can’t–well, no harm, no foul. And I can say that there truly is no harm in it, because with 3K a day going onto the different stories, I’m still making progress that’s way beyond what I’ve been managing. But three new stories with most of their high points already figured out inside my head make the words come easy, and I’m starting to remember how I got those 3.5K days, back when I was just a smidge of ink on the paper.

Another thing I did was find some background music that helps me focus. With the health issues, employment issues, and house issues this year, it’s been tough to focus myself. Anxiety makes it hard not to drop something because it’s not helping you RIGHT THIS VERY SECOND. And, heaven help me, I needed some help there for a while. But, after trying to tough it for far too long, I invested in a lifetime account of Brain.fm. It’s supposed to be scientifically designed background music that changes the way your brain works, helping you relax, or focus, or even sleep. I’ve heard varying reports, most of them positive. Being of the scientific persuasion, I’m skeptical, but I tried it, it’s been working, and I’ve decided that I don’t want to poke the bubble too hard in case it bursts. Even if it only lasts for a little while, it may be enough to help me retrain myself to focus properly again.

The last thing I did, and this is going to sound ridiculous–is I started taking this seriously. As a business. I had thought I was beforehand, but I was fooling myself. Now, I’ve got some self-published works, and I’ve discovered I love the puzzle of marketing. I also crunched the numbers and figured out what I’d have to make in sales per day in order to live off my books. It’s not as scary a number as I thought it would be. And I recognize now all the voices from my past, who thought writing was a cute hobby and if you have that much spare time, shouldn’t you have a second job or be volunteering somewhere to pad out your resume? (Ignoring the fact that the writing was my third job.) And maybe it’s about time I stopped listening to those voices, and listened to what’s inside me. Maybe I can take a run at this, make a real business out of it. I know I’m happier at the keyboard than I am at the Day Job of Doom. Why not? Right?

So if you’ve been doubting yourself, never forget that it’s okay to take some time and say, “I’m going to treat this like it’s real.” And give yourself a chance, even if it flies in the face of everyone around you.

The Romance Reviews Awards–Go Team Nathan!

squirrel ARe coverNuts About You has been nominated in The Romance Reviews Awards for this year, but it needs votes to keep moving through the rounds of the competition. If you like the nutty little rascal, and think that Nathan is a winner (I know Vince thinks he is), could you pop over here and click the blue Nominate This Book button at the top of the page?

Nathan and Vince and I thank you with all our hearts. (Sigh. Charlie’s in the corner laughing his tail feathers off at us. I swear I’m putting crazy glue on that feeder.)

Conversations with my Editor

It’s no secret to anyone who’s known me any length of time–I love to tease my editor at Loose Id. Today, because I was bored and restless and itchy because I can’t take meds before my lung function test tomorrow, I sent her this:

Me: Hee hee. If Julian was real, he’d so kill me:

There was a new layer of muscle on his back and, when Leo explored farther, his ass too.

“How much time do you spend at the gym?”

Julian paused in his ravaging of Leo’s body. “Shut up. It’s not like this job doesn’t need it.” He nibbled his way down Leo’s jaw, pushing Leo’s head back with the pressure, then licked a tickling, arousing line down his neck. “Just think what that muscle can do for you tonight.”

“Fuck,” Leo whispered, and Julian laughed.

“Damn right.” But he was no more immune to the heat between them than Leo was. He arched and rubbed himself against Leo, panting in his ear, and the motion seemed as involuntary as the low groan that shivered against Leo’s skin. “Unph,” he muttered, and grabbed the side of Leo’s ass. His breath shuddered out of him. “No, I’m supposed to go slow. It’s Valentine’s.” He growled and buried his face in Leo’s chest. “This was supposed to be romantic.”

Slow would have been nice, but Julian wasn’t even twenty-five yet. Leo doubted he was capable of slow, not until the edge was taken off. “You brought flowers and wine and fancy chocolate. I’d say we’ve covered the romance part of it. To hell with slow. We’ve got all night, if you want to do slow later.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.” And to prove his point, Leo rolled over on top of Julian and kissed him like he was still twenty, and not looking forty square in the eye.

——-
Some possible pronoun confusion there, but poor Leo.

And what I got back from her:
DUDE! … Omg, why don’t they stock emergency makeout boys in (nameless coffee shop where she likes to hang out and tease the boys)? Fucking toppy Julian. Omg, fucking take-me-baby Leo. Omg.
——-
So, yeah. I think I pushed some buttons there. 😀

But you’re all gonna hate me for what I’m doing to Dave. #sorry #notsorry

So, This Was Unexpected

popcorn chipmunk1Goofing around on facebook, I made a joke about wanting this image on a mug. The next thing I knew, I was hearing from other people who thought that it was a great idea.

I laughed it off at first, but I really wanted one, so I made a couple on Cafe Press just for me, and as a belated Happy Merry Christmas Birthday present for Heloise West. And then I found out that people were serious about wanting the mug. O.O

If you look up at the menu, you’ll see a tab for Non Book Merchandise (stupid name, I need a better one. Feel free to criticize and offer better ideas.) There’s links to my store in Zazzle, where you’ll find a small mug like mine, and a jumbo author-sized mug. I kept the prices down as much as I could–this isn’t about making money, more about a general group hilarity centered around our lovely Nathan. But if you wanted a Team Nathan mug, there you are. Let me know if you want me to set it up on other products, that’s no problem at all. 🙂
